Canada Pavilion | August 29 – November 25, 2012
Having grown up as a military family gypsy, it is no surprise that I had been back and forth across Canada 10 times by my early teens, followed by education and an early work career that had taken me to Europe. Returning to Canada with a family, I was allowed to experience the country through their eyes. The Maritime landscape offers the harsh reality of the Atlantic Ocean - within two weeks we were confronted with Hurricane Juan, and I was truly surprised that my wife did not pack up and leave after our roof had been damaged, our basement flooded, and many trees blown over. The silver lining was in meeting our neighbours and experiencing their generosity. Over time one realizes that Bedrock is the main condition here- the surface that supports life is sometimes very thin, and good neighbors help bridge the gap between survivability and civil society.
